Bergenia ‘Borodin’

A rarely cultivated 'Ballawley' hybrid introduced by Jim Archibald c.1980. It has a distinctive growth habit with thick, leathery, bright green leaves and deep veins giving it a puckered look. Its rhizomes grow deeper in the soil than other Bergenia making this an excellent ground covering plant. Eventually becoming a large plant, it is slightly smaller than its cousin 'Bartok', another 'Ballawley' hybrid selection, growing to about 50cm tall.

Highly attractive drooping clusters of pink-red flowers held in large bunches on branching panicles on stems growing well above the foliage are a real highlight in spring. Reminiscent of B. purpurascens.

Not available for sale in the UK but can be seen in specialist collections and gardens. It can also be found at De Hessenhof in the Netherlands.
