Bergenia ciliata var. ciliata

A very distinct form collected by Tony Schilling in Nepal and shared with me by Kelly and Sue from Far Reaches Farm. Highly attractive dark, rounded foliage that lightens with age. White flowers flushed a gentle pink appear in late spring. It spreads slowly, ideal for the rock garden or a container.

Bergenia ciliata var. ciliata

I received this variety from Joe Sharman at the Great Dixter Autumn Plant Fair in 2022. It has distinct, hairy leaves similar to the plant with the same name sent to me from Far Reaches Farm, yet varying in colour, with the latter being significantly darker. Although this may just be juvenile growth. Its provenance is unknown but it may be a clone from the Tony Schilling collection in Nepal.

Short, pink-red stems carry loose clusters of highly attractive white flowers, blushed the subtlest of pink. Unfortunately, it isn’t scented like the B. ciliata f. ciliata from CUBG, which carries a subtle coconut scent.
