Bergenia cordifolia ‘Flore Pleno’
A rather unusual cultivar due to the fact there is little to no information on it. Hans Kramer of De Hessenhof says that he bought a plant under this name from a Scottish nursery that sadly no longer exists. The plant is said to be double flowered, 'a hose in hose type', and very strong with no winter colour. A plant under this name was also once available from Cotswold Garden Flowers. The flowers are meant to be magenta-pink and vary in their doubleness but the plant sold there has soft salmon pink flowers with foliage that turns red in winter.
A few plants still exist in cultivation, although are very rarely seen. The plant in my collection was received from Cally Gardens but verification is difficult. This plant has dark green foliage with a denticulate margin and turns the most extraordinary deep red-purple in winter. It may have been raised in Scotland but there is no way to currently verify this.
