Bergenia cordifolia ‘New Hybrids’
A really quite attractive but uncommon cultivar. It has bright green, oval shaped, leathery leaves with a prominent and distinctive red margin. In spring, mauve pink flowers appear atop tall stems held well above the foliage. The leaves are more akin to B. crassifolia than B. cordifolia.
The taxonomy of these two species is still unresolved. In the meantime, there is no need to change the specific epithet of these hybrids, even though it may be incorrect. The only available supplier in the UK is Larch Cottage Nurseries.
