Bergenia cordifolia ‘Purpurea’
A superb plant with spectacular foliage. Large, round, crinkled, leathery, bright green leaves, tinged yellow-red throughout the summer, turn the most beautiful purplish-red in winter following frost. Tall, thick, rhubarb-like, red, branching stems carry drooping clusters of vivid, magenta-pink flowers in spring, occasionally repeating through summer. Ideally suited as ground cover.
One of the most commonly available of all Bergenia. Reported to be a seedling of B. cordifolia introduced in 1879 by the nurseryman Parker, of Tooting, London.
