Bergenia crassifolia var. pacifica ‘Cally Gem’
An incredibly rare named form of this variety from Cally Gardens in the south of Scotland, collected by Michael Wickenden in the Russian Far East. It has attractive, dwarf, deep green foliage with a distinctive apex that is more tapered and pointed at the tip, and turns a brilliant pink-red in winter. Slow growing with a neater habit, I’ve yet to see it flower but I am surprised that this named form isn’t more commonly grown.
Published in the Cally Gardens Trade Catalogues in 2009. It isn’t available for sale but can be found in specialist collections.
