Bergenia ‘Eric Smith’

An exceptional cultivar raised by Eric Smith and gifted to Beth Chatto in the 1970s after he left Hadspen House (now known as The Newt in Somerset). It was later named by Beth in honour of her friend. It has large, thick, leathery, shiny, wavy edged deep green foliage. In winter, the leaves turn a brilliant plum crimson colour, almost black, making this one of the best Bergenia for winter interest. Masses of deep pink drooping flowers held in dark red calyces on branching, thick green stems appear in spring.

Rarely offered but can be found for sale from Beth Chatto Plants and Gardens and other specialist nurseries.
