Bergenia ‘Opal’

A 20th century German cultivar attributed to Countess Helen von Stein of Staudengärtnerei Gräfin von Zeppelin. The large, rounded leaves are bright green with a slightly wavy margin and prominent pink petiole and margin. Excellent ground cover with a neat and attractive habit. Clusters of lilac-pink flowers appear in spring atop tall red stems.

Sadly, no longer available in trade in the UK. Plants sold by Barracott Plants are likely to be Bergenia purpurascens, or a named cultivar. It is still available from a select few nurseries in Europe, including De Hessenhof and Staudengärtnerei Kirschenlohr.
