Bergenia pacumbis CC

A wild collection from Chris Chadwell sold by Growild Nursery. Distinct rounded leaves with coarse hairs on the upper leaf surface, sparse on the underside, with a similarly hairy margin, blushed pink-red. One of the few B. pacumbis to have hairs on the petiole (a feature shared by the B. pacumbis sold by Beth Chatto). Leaves are leathery and bright green. It shows no resemblance to other Chris Chadwell collections (CC1793 and CC3616). Further study of the species is necessary.

The name may be incorrect due to the presence of hairs on the upper and lower leaf surface, and could instead be attributed to B. ciliata. It’s difficult to confirm this as there is much infraspecific variation and hybridisation in both species. A true pacumbis is glabrous on both the upper and lower leaf surface, with some taxa displaying pubescence on the leaves in early growth and becoming glabrous with age.
