Bergenia ugamica V.N. Pavlov

An unusual species native to the Tashkent region of E. Uzbekistan with limited information and photos due to a lack of research on it since it was discovered by Pavlov in 1957. A description provided by Yeo in his Revision is an abridgement of the original description and based on a photo of the isotype provided by the Komarov Herbarium.

Although characters are provided by Pavlov to distinguish B. ugamica from B. delayavi and B. purpurascens, Yeo notes that such characters are valueless, apart from one: that the flowers of B. ugamica are not reflexed. Yeo recognises that there is strong 'agreement' between B. ugamica and B. purpurascens and that these are likely conspecific.

Further investigation into flower orientation is required. The issue of geography needs to be considered in separating B. ugamica from B. purpurascens. Bergenia ugamica grows at the farthest western edge of the distribution range of the genus, separated from B. purpurascens by 1400 miles. This could be attributed to ancient trade routes.
