Bergenia ‘Vorfrühling’
A rather rare cultivar nowadays introduced by Heinz Klose in 1977. It has large, flat deep green leaves with a prominent pink petiole and a slightly toothed margin (more so when young). In spring, tall pink stems extend well above the foliage, carrying clusters of semi-double, soft pink flowers held in glossy, liver red calyces.
Unfortunately, not many of Heinz Klose’s introductions survive today. Thankfully this cultivar is still available in trade but only in Germany. It can be seen in specialist collections in the UK but isn’t available for sale.
